While it’s easy to dismiss ghosts, vampires and werewolves as symptoms of an overactive imagination, getting lost in the woods is an altogether more relatable and primal fear. We’ve all taken a wrong turn and felt that momentary feeling of panic rise within us. The Blair Witch Project takes that feeling and bottles it across 81 punishing minutes. 

The huge financial success of Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick’s film cannot be overstated, and the film’s influence on the horror landscape is also not up for debate. This simple tale of a missing camera crew in the backwoods of Maryland inspired a slew of imitators, but none of them matched the creeping dread and chilling conclusion of The Blair Witch Project.
