Carnival of Souls was released to a collective shrug in September of 1962. In the aftermath of the film’s release, Herk Harvey, the director, never worked again, the production company went bust and Candace Hilligloss, the film’s star, was dropped by her agent. This is cursed cinema.

And yet, in the years since the film’s inauspicious release, Carnival of Souls has been reclaimed in the horror community as an arthouse neo-noir masterpiece. Its eerie, ethereal atmosphere has pervaded horror cinema ever since.
